Culture & HistoryPhoenix Culture, History and Outdoor Activities

If you're a history buff (or just want to sneak some education into your kids
during this trip), consider visiting these Phoenix historic & cultural sights during
your time in the city. Or, get outside and explore the great hiking and other outdoor activities Phoenix has to offer.

  • The Heard Museum shows the art, artifacts and history
of Southwestern people, from Native Americans to Hispanic cultures.

  • If you're intrested in modern art, visit the Phoenix Art Museum.
The photography and fashion galleries are known throughout the region.

  • The Desert Botanical Garden offers a collection of more than
50,000 desert plants on display throughout five thematic trails
as well as geological formations like Hole in the Rock.
You'll probably find some great photography opportunities here too!

  • Visit South Mountain Park, the largest city park in the U.S., which
features Mount Suppoa and Dobbins Lookout and
    houses an impressive chuckwalla population.

  • Give Camelback Mountain a try for a more challenging hike.
Two trails over a mile long ascend 1,280 feet to the peak of the mountain,
the highest in the region. Give yourselves a good 2-3 hours for this one.

  • Lastly, there's Piestewa Peak, formerly known as Squaw Mountain. The second-highest mountain in the range takes its name from SPC Lori Piestewa,
the first woman to be killed during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq
and the first-ever Native American woman in history to die
while serving in the U.S. military. Take in views of the
Phoenix valley and the surrounding mountains from the peak.

  • Get carried away with Hot Air Balloon Expeditions, America's best
and largest hot air balloon tour operation. We recommend taking
a sunrise or sunset ride. Make it as romantic as you like,
but, you know, bring your camera.

  • Check out the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West,
    his desert masterpiece.

  • Visit the Arizona Science Center, which offers hands-on fun for children and adults with more than 300 interactive exhibits as well as a state-of-the-art planetarium.

  • The Musical Instrument Museum showcases instruments from around the world as well as collectibles from musical stars. Plus, the Experience Room lets you play rare instruments from different cultures.

  • Are you after a true Wild West experience? Look no further than Western Destinations, located north of Phoenix at Canyon Creek Ranch. You can go horseback riding, stroll an authentic old western town, try the tomahawk toss and even duel the Governor for his daughter

  • The Phoenix Zoo is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, and is currently the only zoo featuring Andean bear cubs. Cute!
