Forging a Path: Being a Big Fish in a Big Senior Pond

Session Time: January 20, 5:00 pm - 6:15 pm
Location: GWCC, A313/A314, Building A, Level 3

Have you ever felt like you're drowning in a gigantic lake filled with senior portrait photographers who are creating the same old thing?  Feeling frustrated, are you looking to forge your own path and create something exciting and new?  Let's face it: seniors and athletes are bored with traditional portraiture--standing in a pretty field or just holding a ball and feeling like a statue; they want something more. They are looking for a different type of portrait—something more dynamic, exciting, and intense. Our studio created a new and exciting take on senior portraits: SPORTRAITS.  Sportraits fuse the world of portraits and athletics to give your client the dynamic and exciting sports portrait ready to grace the cover of any sports magazine—the photo they’ve been craving.  Mixing movement, dynamic lighting and special effects, interactive posing, a strong knowledge of sports, and what athletes want, we've created a unique look for seniors that helps fuel this new movement in sports portraiture.  But we don't stop there...we create fantastical and dramatic portraits for all of our seniors, from the musician to the fashionista.

During class, we'll dive into topics that teach you how we create our own style of senior portraiture, IN-CAMERA--no compositing needed (but still optional)!  We'll cover topics including lighting techniques, special effects, posing, the psychology of how an athletic brain works and what an athlete wants, and post-processing (everything you need to make your photographs pop).  We will also explore optional and minimal compositing techniques that will enhance the standard sportrait session, adding extra money in your pocket in the sales room!  We will also explain how to target and market to your ideal sportrait client (not just seniors!) and the products they want to buy, as well as how to keep a strong social media presence to ensure that you remain the go-to photographer in your market.  In a portrait world dominated by the same old thing, we want to bust the stereotypical way of doing things and show that we can accomplish amazing things the more you think outside the box.
